
Dr Jeannie Herbert, Director, Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (BIITE) located in the
Northern Territory
Prior to taking up this position leading Australia’s only Indigenous tertiary institution, Dr Herbert was Head of the School of Indigenous Australian Studies (1998-2002) and Chair of Indigenous Australian Studies (2001-2005), at James Cook University in north Queensland. Her work in the tertiary sector follows a long career (classroom teacher P-12, VET and university sectors - 20+ years; educational administrator, schooling VET and HE sectors - 10+ years). Dr Herbert’s research over the last decade has focused on Indigenous success in education with her PhD study providing valuable insights into Indigenous Australian notions of success within the context of Indigenous engagement within the Australian university. In recognition of her research in Indigenous education, Dr Herbert was awarded a prestigious Betty Watts Award by the
AARE in 2005. Her paper entitled “Owning the Discourse: Seizing the Power!”, was presented at the AARE 2005 Conference, “Education Research: Creative Dissent: Constructive Solutions” held at The University of Western Sydney, Parramatta Campus, Sydney, NSW, in November, 2005.
Dr Herbert is currently a member of the:
· Desert Peoples Centre Management Board;
· National Indigenous Higher Education Advisory Council;
· Research and Innovations Board of the
Northern Territory ;
· National ACER Standing Committee on Indigenous Education; and
· National APAPDC Indigenous Education Steering Committee.
Keynote Presentation:
In this presentation, Dr Jeannie Herbert, will explore the theme for this 9th Indigenous Researchers’ Conference, Research - Critical Tool for Self Empowerment. In de-constructing the notion of self-empowerment within the context of research, this paper will provide a theoretical framing for the conference while as the same time, revealing why contemporary Indigenous researchers are changing perceptions about the value of research to Indigenous peoples.
