The theme for the Forum, "Research: Critical tool for self-empowerment", will enable participants to reflect upon ways in which research is currently used to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples with the opportunity to engage in a process that begins with the self-empowerment for the individual and, ultimately, enables family and community well-being.
This theme relfects the significance of the Australian Government's on-going priorities to achieve quality outcomes in the areas of Indigenous higher education and research. The synergies that exist for using research as a tool for self-empowerment that will enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples to achieve success in higher education are becoming increasingly self-evident.
This conference will provide any opportunity for participants to engage with others in identifying such synergies while also developing strategies that will enable them to build on those synergies in ways that will make their own research more self-empowering.
This conference will provide an in-depth learning environment where the mix of activities will enable participants to 'listen, observe and do', this ensuring their total engagement with the knowledge, understanding and skills that are embedded within the conference theme. This engagement at both theoretical and practical levels are key elements in preparing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples to take on the challenges associated with becoming effective citizens in a globalised environment, citizens who will have the capacity to lead their communities into the future through collaborative practice.
The 9th Indigenous Researchers' Forum is being held immediately after the 3rd Cultural Collaborations Forum in Alice Springs, Australia, July 2007
