Marilyn Miller, Artistic Director, Kooemba Jdarra Indigenous Performing Arts Company

During her final year in NAISDA Dance College , Marilyn performed in ’s Bicentennial concert, opening the indigenous section. She then became a guest artist with The Queensland Ballet performing in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne . During that same year she toured to and with the 'performing group' that was later to become Bangarra.

Once graduating, Marilyn was program coordinator for Jabiru Cabaret Restaurant and returned to NAISDA to become Assistant Course Coordinator.  Marilyn then went on to become the sole female co-founder, dancer, and choreographer of 's first Indigenous mainstream Company, Aboriginal Islander Dance Theatre - the Company. She was a senior artist with Bangarra Dance Theatre and whilst with the company performed with the Australian Ballet. She has also performed for One Extra Dance Company, Kooemba Jdarrra Theatre Company, Belvoir Street Theatre, and Fresh Dancers.Her choreographic achievements have seen works produced for AIDT-the Company; Bangarra; One Extra Company; Kooemba Jdarra Performing Arts Company; Contact Youth Theatre; Jabiru Cabaret Restaurant; Fresh; ABC-TV; SBS-TV; FOX Television; Australian National Museum; Sydney Olympics Mascot Launch; Playbox Theatre.

 

Marilyn has been teaching throughout and Internationally for the past 20 years, specialising in Indigenous Contemporary dance.

2000 - Saw Marilyn as Artistic Director of the creation of 's Paralympic Flame, Rehearsal Director for the Opening Ceremony of the Pacific Arts Festival in Noumea - New Caledonia, and choreographer/performer for Sydney 's Olympic Live Sights street theatre. Marilyn also choreographed the video installation for the First Peoples Gallery, Australian National Museum .

2001 - Marilyn choreographed for Parramatta's Foundation Day, and as Artistic Director/Coordinator of Fresh Dancers confirmed a 3month residency for the company in , (December 2001 - February 2002).

2002 - Began with Marilyn as an Australia Day Ambassador and the realisation of her full-length work "QIUNKAN". A short film for the World Heritage Organisation-Fraser Island . Choreography for "The Call", Playbox Theatre - Melbourne Festival. Presenter at The Australian Dance Awards - Sydney Opera House. Appointed Chairperson of the Dance Committee of the NSW Ministry for the Arts.

2003 - Saw the completion of a Business Degree (UTS), General Manager NAISDA Dance College , guest Indigenous choreographer Melbourne Festival Workshop program, 2nd stage development "Quinkan". Appointed as co-Chair Indigenous, Arts Reference Group, committee member Western Sydney , and committee member Robert Helpmann Award for the NSW Ministry for the Arts.

2004 - Began with Adelaide Fringe Festival-"Quinkan", Choreography "The Call"-Playbox Theatre Melbourne International Arts Festival, Mentor - Indigenous performing group, Tasmania . Resident Performer NSW Art Gallery . Appointed as Chair for the Robert Helpmann Award for the NSW Ministry for the Arts.

2005 – June, appointed Artistic Director, Kooemba Jdarra Performing Arts Company.
